The Jack Russell puppy is the bodacious little animal seen by many on television and the movies. If you are to become the owner of a Jack Russell puppy don’t expect a lap dog or couch potato. The dog gets its name from a colorful gentleman by the name of Jack Russell who was a bold and rambunctious hunter from the 1850s. He bred his dog from the wire-haired Fox Terrier.
Jack wanted a fearless little dog that would chase a fox into its den without killing it. Jack Russell puppies would be taught to scare the fox out into view where foxhounds would begin the chase. They were bred to have short legs, which enabled them to crawl into tight spaces. Their master’s brash personality seemed to be ingrained in his dogs.
These little terriers were afraid of nothing. These energetic little dogs need to be occupied with constructive activities. A strong-willed owner who is willing to train and discipline the dog from the beginning best owns the Jack Russell puppy. This dog is part of the working dog class and his hunting skills are considered more important than his physical appearance.
The Jack Russell Terrier Club sets breeding guidelines forth, however. Their height should be 10-15 inches. The fur can be wiry or smooth. Colors are generally white with markings of brown, black, or tan. As working dogs they should appear physically fit. The ears should tip forward a little. Their slim chest makes him appear fit. The rear legs are bred to be strong and the tail is clipped to about four inches.
As we have said the Jack Russell puppy was intended to chase small animals. It is his inbred nature. The Jack Russell is likely to want to pursue any small animal he sees. This is normal. These habits can be a source of concern for the owner. A walk outside can become an adventure. They will go after about anything that moves. They will chase other small dogs.
These dogs tend to have fewer health problems than others. Puppy mill breeders trying to turn out high volume may change this, however.
